What is aspect based sentiment analysis?

A guide to aspect based sentiment analysis, ABSA, how it differs from ordinary sentiment analysis, how it works, and why it is the technique that supports real decisions.

Answer

Aspect based sentiment analysis is a technique that scores sentiment separately for each specific attribute a customer mentions, such as battery, taste or service, rather than assigning one overall sentiment label to the whole review.

Why ordinary sentiment analysis is insufficient

Ordinary sentiment analysis returns one label per piece of text, positive, negative or neutral. Real reviews are mixed. A phone review can praise the screen, criticise the battery and shrug at the camera in one breath. A single label averages that into mush, and an average is not something any team can act on.

How ABSA works

ABSA does three things. It detects the aspects present in the text, the specific attributes customers talk about in a category. It attaches sentiment to each aspect, even when several appear in one sentence. And it aggregates across many reviews so patterns emerge at the attribute level.

A worked example

The review, the battery lasts for days but calls sound muffled and it slips at the gym, becomes three signals:

Worked example
Battery92
Mic quality41
Fit56

The chain that matters: aspect, sentiment, evidence, decision

Good ABSA does not stop at a score. It ties each aspect score to the evidence, the real sentences behind it, so a claim can be trusted, and it frames the result so a decision follows. Aspect, then sentiment, then evidence, then decision. Break that chain and you are back to a number nobody acts on.

Frequently asked questions

What is aspect based sentiment analysis?

Aspect based sentiment analysis scores sentiment separately for each specific attribute a customer mentions, such as battery, taste or service, rather than assigning one overall label to the whole review.

What is the difference between sentiment analysis and aspect based sentiment analysis?

Sentiment analysis returns a single label for a piece of text. Aspect based sentiment analysis breaks the text into individual attributes and scores each separately, so you learn which specific things customers like or dislike, and why.

Why is ABSA better for decisions?

Because decisions are made at the attribute level. Knowing the microphone drives returns is actionable in a way an overall sentiment score is not.
